IG Group cuts 2026 revenue guidance to mid-single-digit growth as Q3 revenue falls ~14%, the day's only clear UK Plc downgrade.
What UK Plc said today
The standout signal is IGG's Q3 trading update: revenue of approximately £240m, down ~14% year-on-year, with full-year guidance lowered to "mid-single-digit per cent" growth. Management notes "first trades and active customers remained strong" and claims continued confidence in medium-term targets, but the headline is a guidance cut on softer monetisation despite healthy acquisition — a mixed-tone update that reads as a de facto downgrade.
Results releases were thinner than the tier count suggests: CBG, JDW and KIE published Annual Report notifications without fresh numbers (prior prelims already in the market), so no incremental signal. ATOM disclosed widening losses (FY25 operating loss US$7.9m; H1 2026 loss US$11.2m vs US$2.5m prior year) and, more materially, served formal Notice of Dispute and ICSID arbitration intent against the Paraguayan Government over the revoked Villeta PPA — a binary legal overhang on a US$665m-financed project with Yara offtake.
M&A was the day's dominant theme. In Irish banking, PTSB disclosed a Rule 2.4 possible competing offer from Axis Capital at €3.20/share, 7.7% above the agreed BAWAG PSK scheme at €2.97 — framed around keeping PTSB Irish-headquartered. In UK upstream, CNE's increased recommended cash offer from Genel is now progressing toward a Q4 2026 effective date after rival DNO declared its terms final; only the Egyptian regulatory condition remains. RBD's all-share bid for Union Jack Oil lapsed after acceptances reached just 13.02% versus the 75% threshold. HWG's board was fully replaced by five Peel Group representatives following completion of the unconditional takeover.
Capital returns and funding sat alongside the deal flow: IAG launched a €500m buyback (€374m market, €126m pro-rata from Qatar Airways) completing its €1.5bn excess cash return, while DATA closed a £5m buyback at 58.20p–60.70p. Smaller equity raises came from EAAS (£6.3m placing plus £2m retail at 0.3p to shore up working capital) and FAR (£4.68m to clear 2026 bond obligations).
Statistical releases
- ONS Average household income, UK: FY ending 2025 — the headline household income release for the latest financial year; context for consumer-exposed names such as DFS and JDW.
Policy / monetary
- [BoE] appointed Carlos Conceicao and Alexander Justham to the Enforcement Decision Making Committee (effective September 2026) — governance, not policy signal.
- HMT published August 2026 Treasury Minutes responding to PAC reports — procedural.
Themes
- M&A dispersion in Irish/UK financials and energy. Two live contested situations (PTSB, CNE) sit against a failed bid (RBD) and a completed one (HWG) — bidders are willing to pay up where the strategic prize is clear, and walk where acceptances don't come.
- Capital returns continue at the top end. IAG's €500m tranche and DATA's completed buyback contrast with the small-cap funding squeeze visible in EAAS and FAR raising at deep-discount equity. The large-cap/small-cap financing gap remains wide.
- Guidance tone cracks in UK retail-facing financials. IGG's downgrade is isolated today but worth flagging against the generally stable results backdrop; monetisation per customer, not acquisition, is the weak link.
Watch
- CNE/Genel scheme targeting Q4 2026 effective date, pending Egyptian regulatory condition.
- EAAS General Meeting 23 October 2026; placing admission 26 October 2026.
- FAR admission 6 October 2026; CLC admission ~6 October 2026; HFEL issue 5 October 2026; BUR admission 8 October 2026.
- IAG buyback programme runs to 26 February 2027.
- PTSB Rule 2.7 firm-offer deadline will set the clock on the Axis Capital counter-bid.
