Headline

No profit warnings; MCON raises FY guidance into a day dominated by capital returns, with SSE, SSPG and OMG all launching buybacks.

What UK Plc said today

The strongest concrete signal came from MCON, which raised full-year 2026 revenue and EBITDA guidance "ahead of market expectations" on nine-month revenue 28% ahead of the prior year, with most growth coming from construction. DFCH reaffirmed FY expectations on Q3 new loan origination of £561m (+22% YoY), citing momentum building in asset finance. MOTR reaffirmed H1 FY27 underlying PBT of £9.8m–£10.8m on retail volume growth of 7.6%, outperforming the wider used car market.

The mixed note of the day was SSPG: FY26 revenue c.£3.8bn (+5%) and EPS c.14.0p (+18%) in line with expectations, but operating profit c.£230m "slightly lower than planned" and free cash flow c.£70m "modestly below prior expectation" — Q4 LFL of +4% was dragged by subdued APAC and EEME passenger numbers against strong UK performance.

In results, JGGI delivered NAV total return of +16.7% but materially trailed its MSCI All Countries World Index benchmark (+27.7%), while continuing its 11th consecutive dividend increase (FY27 declared at 24.8p, +7.8%). Notably, JGGI escalated geopolitical risk to "heightened" and introduced a new principal risk, "Widespread Social and Economic Disruption," combining energy shock, inflation and AI-driven unemployment. PRIS reported a cash shell in near-liability, dependent on shareholder approval of a £500k recap at the 27 October GM; shares remain suspended.

Statistical releases

  • ONS UK trade development plan update, October 2026 — procedural methodology/plan update rather than a hard data print.

Policy / monetary

[BoE] confirmed the Cross-Market Operational Resilience Group (CMORG) completed its biennial SIMEX26 simulation on 8 October, focused on a global cloud services disruption — relevant signalling for financials' operational resilience disclosures. Nothing material from HMT.

Themes

Capital returns dominated the tape. SSE launched a non-discretionary £105m buyback via UBS running to end-January 2027, explicitly tied to capping scrip dividend take-up at 25% under its dividend plan to 2029/30. SSPG announced a £50m buyback alongside results, citing "progress in sustainable cash generation." OMG paired a £3m buyback with its strategic update. CTY issued £572.5m of equity at a premium to NAV and OIT continued its premium-management issuance — closed-end funds using market strength to issue, operating companies using it to shrink.

AI value chain remains the stated capital-allocation anchor. JGGI framed its optimism around "the AI value chain, and… beyond AI." OMG positioned Vicon as a "movement intelligence platform for an AI-enabled world," imminently acquiring Move AI (£525k) to accelerate markerless capture, and guided FY27 Adjusted EBIT "at or above" the current £3.5m market expectation. SSIT committed US$15m to Xona Space Systems in next-generation satnav infrastructure.

M&A activity sat heavily at the small/speculative end. Possible offers for [1SN] (Metals X) and PTSB (Scotchstone Capital) were disclosed without consideration terms. FOX completed a transformative all-share acquisition repositioning it as a North American gold explorer. TBTG founders sold £6.0m of stock at 400p — the first disposal since the October 2025 IPO.
