UK Plc delivers a rare cluster of upgrades — LIKE, WVIA, CCT and TLW all raise guidance — while HMT leans into jobs and export finance.
What UK Plc said today
No profit warnings in the operating universe. The dominant signal is a cluster of upgrades: LIKE now expects FY26 underlying PBT "materially ahead" at not less than £5.0m vs £3.1m prior year, with Q3 sales +29.1% and an interim dividend raised 20%; WVIA guides FY Adjusted EBITDA "ahead of current market expectations" on the back of +42.7% H1 revenue and £109.7m top line, with Prize Draw EBITDA trending near £2m/month in Q4; CCT flagged PBT ~20% above market on a strong July–August finish; and TLW upgraded FY free cash flow guidance to $170–250m at $70–100/bbl, helped by $95/bbl realisations and Ghana receivable recovery. RCN reaffirmed FY27 in-line and reinstated the dividend after the £124.9m data-centre disposal, with adjusted net debt cut to £2.8m post-buyback.
Against that, the tail is fragile. MET cut FY26 revenue guidance and escalated going-concern language to "acute priority" fundraising risk; DIS suspended trading pending fundraising completion; BLOE, TCF and TRP all flagged going-concern material uncertainty. [4BB] guided FY revenue below the £1.7m 2025 print despite a six-fold pipeline expansion to £63m. HUD pivoted to live commerce after a 24.7% revenue drop and £1.6m brand impairment.
M&A stayed heavy: TRB's recommended takeover price was raised to c.£231m (105p/share); XPF disposed of Boom Battle Bar for up to £11m to concentrate on Escape Hunt (51% site ROIC); WVIA confirmed the £19.1m Giveaway Guys deal; HICL deployed c.£68m into Scandinavian rail freight as its first Enhancer investment.
Statistical releases
- ONS Investigating non-response to the Labour Force Survey using administrative data — methodological, but relevant given persistent LFS quality concerns feeding into wage and unemployment prints.
- ONS Physical energy flow accounts (PEFA) 2026 — environmental accounts release, low market sensitivity.
Policy / monetary
Nothing from [BoE]. HMT published two initiatives: a Chancellor-backed package for youth employment, education and training; and a new UK Export Finance loan guarantee for overseas buyers of British goods and services (posted twice, same policy). Both feed the "growth via labour supply + exports" framing rather than delivering fiscal detail.
Themes
- Guidance dispersion widens. Four upgrades (LIKE, WVIA, CCT, TLW) versus explicit downgrades/going-concern flags at MET, DIS, BLOE, TCF, TRP, [4BB]. Winners cite pricing power, recurring revenue, or commodity tailwinds; losers cite funding gaps and delayed conversion.
- Balance-sheet resets driving returns. RCN returned £90m via tender post-disposal and reinstated dividend; CHRY redeeming £25m from Klarna proceeds; VEIL returned £263.6m across two tenders; QQ. running a £50m fourth buyback tranche. Discount-narrowing capital returns are the dominant investment-trust behaviour.
- AI-adjacent capital continues to gather. SHR raised US$42.8m post-period to build direct AI exposure (Anthropic, ByteDance, Figure AI, Stripe, SandboxAQ) — a retail-accessible wrapper for private AI names, relevant to the [[investor_strategy]] AI-receivers thesis but with obvious valuation-discipline caveats.
- Consumer/leisure bifurcating. WVIA and LIKE show operating leverage on volume; XPF exiting competitive-socialising formats; HUD restructuring around live commerce. Format matters more than category.
