Headline
Ferrexpo's US$100m rescue raise and going-concern warnings anchor a session dominated by capital repair, while UK consumer signals stay soft FXPO.
What UK Plc said today
No profit warnings, but the sharpest signal is FXPO: H1 revenue collapsed -57% YoY to US$196m, underlying EBITDA swung to -US$4m, and management flags bankruptcy proceedings against subsidiary FPM, a UAH157bn (~US$3.5bn) damages claim, and ongoing VAT refund suspension as material going-concern risks. The US$100m equity raise (shareholder-approved 21 Sept) and lifted LSE suspension buy time rather than resolve the overhang. RBN trimmed the forward curve — FY26 profit still in line, but FY27 now guided only "broadly in line with FY2026", implicitly capping growth. SSTY printed a hostel-sector slowdown: revenue -10.6%, occupancy down 7.4ppt to 60.8%, forward bookings -21% YoY, EBITDA margin collapsing from 22.6% to 7.5% despite an 8.3% bed-rate rise. MPO is in orderly wind-down after a failed December raise, with Penha Heights loans in default and adjusted NAV -49.8%.
Against that, genuine strength was concentrated in growth-portfolio vehicles: MNTN NAV +29.1% in six months on SpaceX's US$1.77tn IPO (53x on the 2019 mark) and Bending Spoons (18x); JMGI NAV total return +54.5% for FY26; UTL NAV total return +49.8%. Operating businesses that delivered: BGO reaffirmed FY guidance with ARR +31% and NRR at 119%; TND returned to H1 profit with gross margin expansion to 33.3% and YTD trading +9.1%. Capital returns continued — LLOY completed its £1.75bn buyback, W7L closed a £2.5m programme, IGR launched up to 4.5m shares.

Policy / monetary
[BoE] published minutes of the 24 September Market Participants Group meeting — a market-narrative forum feeding the MPC, not a policy decision. Nothing from HMT.
Themes
Capital repair over expansion. The heaviest news flow was balance-sheet: FXPO's US$100m raise, MPO's debt restructuring after a failed placing, HAMA selling 8 BTC for £482k to fund PEA and reduce debt, SSTY using property disposals to cut net debt from £16.2m to ~£6.1m post-period. Where cash exists it is being returned (LLOY £1.75bn, W7L £2.5m, IGR new programme, UTL buybacks at 20% discount) rather than reinvested.
Consumer weakness beneath the guidance-in-line language. SSTY's occupancy and forward bookings, RBN's flat FY27, and TND's -13% Toy/-19% Golf categories point to soft discretionary demand. Where TND offsets with Bikes +15% and Home & Garden +76%, mix — not the cycle — is doing the work.
Private growth is repricing up, listed UK small caps are repricing down. MNTN +29.1% NAV in six months and JMGI +54.5% FY reflect the SpaceX/Bending Spoons IPO window reopening, while UK-listed micro caps (SSTY, MPO, HAMA) trade on going-concern and dilution mechanics.
