Trainline reconfirms guidance while Circle8 tables — and SThree rejects — a cash approach, as ONS drops the full July UK activity print.

What UK Plc said today

No profit warnings in the tape. The strongest single earnings signal came from LPA, which raised FY26 guidance: "revenue and profits… ahead of previous market expectations," with FY27 unchanged — a clean beat-and-hold from the electrification specialist. PEG echoed the industrials tone: H1 adjusted EBITDA up 53% to £781k on a 350bp gross-margin lift to 52.2%, order book £9.6m, and management "confident" of another year of "significant improvement," citing Rail order intake at a 5-year high and the £2.2m Challenger 3 engineering award from Rheinmetall BAE.

Consumer-facing signals were more mixed. TRN reconfirmed FY27 guidance (net ticket sales £6.2–6.45bn, EBITDA margin c.2.9%, International to breakeven) and layered on a fresh £100m buyback, but flagged that the CMA opened a probe into UK fee presentation on 19 August. BKG reaffirmed its £1.4bn four-year pre-tax profit plan, guided H1-weighted profits and c.£250m half-year net cash, but told the market that "customers without an immediate need to move… remain more cautious to commit" — enquiry levels stable, conversion soft.

M&A dominated the tape. STEM confirmed and rejected a cash approach from Nasdaq-listed Circle8 as "significantly undervaluing" the group; PUSU deadline 7 October. GAMA disclosed continued Waterland interest under Rule 2.4 with no certainty of an offer. TRB recommended a £189.3m cash take-private by Main Capital (GM 2 October, completion Q4). SUPR deployed £104m into six grocery assets, completing its £100m equity raise. Capital returns continued: IAG finished its €500m buyback, LGEN completed the first £600m tranche of its £1.2bn programme at an average 266.07p.

Policy / monetary

Nothing material from BoE. From HMT, the National Wealth Fund Limited Annual Report and Accounts for the year to 31 March 2026 was published — the first full-year account of the rebranded UKIB vehicle.

Themes

  • Take-private premium hunting is live in UK small/mid-caps. TRB recommended at £189.3m, STEM rejecting Circle8, GAMA entertaining Waterland — three separate approaches into UK-listed names in a single session suggests overseas and PE bidders continue to view London valuations as exploitable.
  • Buyback cadence is accelerating at scale. IAG €500m done, LGEN £600m done with another £600m loaded, TRN a new £100m — capital return, not capex, is the dominant use of surplus cash across the tape today.
  • Industrials tone diverges from consumer/housing. LPA raising and PEG flagging Rail/Defence strength contrasts with BKG's "more cautious to commit" from housebuyers and TRN's CMA overhang — the domestic cyclical read is clearly two-speed.
