Mortgage broker MAB1 cut full-year profit guidance ~12% below consensus as a subdued housing market bites, offsetting a clean guidance raise from Aerospace-exposed VCT.
What UK Plc said today
The day's clearest negative signal came from MAB1, which cut FY26 adjusted PBT guidance to ~£38.0m against consensus of £43.4m, citing UK purchase transactions running 3% lower over seven months and July mortgage approvals for house purchase down 15% YoY. Franchisor TPFG echoed the same read on the housing market — "subdued sales market", consumer confidence weighing — though it reaffirmed guidance on the back of a diversified financial services and franchising mix (revenue +7%, dividend +10%).
On the other side of the ledger, VCT raised: underlying PBT now expected £45–47m versus £42–44m prior, with Q4 momentum driven by Aerospace, VARs and Electronics. CNS told the market it will exceed revenue and "significantly exceed" EBITDA expectations for FY26 after H1 revenue +42% and ARR +12%; EWG narrowed its adjusted cash EBITDA range up to €110–115m from €105–115m.
Otherwise, the results tape was constructive. ANP delivered adjusted EBITDA +22% and reaffirmed FY, though flagged the Iran conflict as a material Asia headwind ("we expect these challenges to continue for the remainder of the year"). GYM reaffirmed FY guidance and now expects EBITDA less normalised rent at the top of forecasts. PEB posted adjusted EBITDA +25% with margin +400bps. STCM booked a sharp step-up (revenue +43% KZT, statutory operating profit USD11.8m vs USD0.01m). NXQ confirmed FY in line but H1 revenue –34%. HWG widened losses (statutory loss £24.9m vs £7.1m profit) but is pivoting hard to "pure-play powered land and industrial & logistics" with a second hyperscale data-centre land sale in exclusivity.
M&A/capital-actions were unusually heavy. GDWN agreed the sale of its Mechanical Engineering division to Cerberus for up to ~£1.1bn (transformative; completion Q1 2027). ARS completed the US$105m disposal of Indokal to Norin Mining and declared a US$93m special dividend. AIRE's Glenstone offer went unconditional at 71.4p cash. STEM confirmed an approach from Circle8 (PUSU 7 October). ABDN appointed Torbjörn Magnusson as Chair-designate, succeeding Sir Douglas Flint.

Themes
- Housing transactions still soft: MAB1's guidance cut and TPFG's "subdued" commentary point the same way; MAB1's –15% YoY mortgage approvals data is the concrete anchor. Anyone with UK purchase-transaction leverage should be watched into Q4.
- Aerospace is doing the heavy lifting in industrials: both VCT (raise) and CAR (margins/operating profit ahead on slightly lower revenue) explicitly cite Aerospace demand as the driver, with diagnostics (CAR) still soft.
- Guidance dispersion widening: raises from VCT, CNS, EWG sit alongside MAB1's cut and NXQ's –34% revenue print — sector, not cycle, is doing the work.
- Portfolio simplification via disposal: GDWN (Cerberus, £1.1bn), ARS (Indokal), GAL (Omagh) and HWG's residential exit all point to boards monetising non-core assets in a decent deal market.
