GETECH GROUP PLC (GTC) — Investment Research Note
Executive summary
Getech is a UK-listed AIM micro-cap that sells proprietary geoscience data, the Globe subsurface platform, and expert services used by oil & gas majors, miners, and (increasingly) natural hydrogen explorers to locate subsurface resources. Over the past five years the business has shrunk from £5.1m revenue in 2021 to £4.0m in 2023, then rebuilt to £5.0m in 2025 and £2.4m in H1 2026 (+15% YoY), with cost base cut ~20% in H1 2025 delivering the first EBITDA-positive halves since 2019. The single most important valuation point today is that a 15%-growth, £5m-mcap, cash-lean, £3m-ARR business is roughly fairly priced — the equity has already run 80% in a year — and the thesis for further re-rating rests on ARR growth and the strategic value of the proprietary G&M database, now partly validated by Xcalibur taking a 25.5% stake in July 2026.
Fair value estimate
- Fair value range: 3.5p – 5.5p per share; implied market cap £5.3m – £8.4m (GBP)
- Methodology: Blend of (i) 2.0–2.5x forward ARR of ~£3.0m; (ii) 1.0–1.5x FY26E revenue of ~£5.5m; (iii) cross-check on modest EV/EBITDA of 8–10x on annualised adj. EBITDA run-rate of ~£0.6–0.8m 2026-09 interim, 2026-04 final results.
- Key assumptions: ARR grows to £3.3–3.6m by end-FY26 as pipeline converts; adj. EBITDA £0.5–0.8m for FY26; no takeover premium embedded despite Xcalibur's 25.5% strategic holding.
- Current mcap £5.0m sits at the very bottom of the range.
- Absolute upside/(downside): +38% to mid (4.5p); +69% to top (5.5p); +8% to low (3.5p).
Sector context
- ICB classification "Energy" is technically correct but misleading — Getech is a data/software vendor to the energy exploration value chain, not a hydrocarbon producer.
- Quality profile is below typical AIM software peers (sub-scale, historically loss-making, thin balance sheet) but the proprietary global gravity & magnetics database is a genuinely rare asset.
- Closest listed comparables: CGG (Viridien), PGS, TGS (all seismic/subsurface data at vastly larger scale). Also loosely: Sound Energy (JV partner), Cornish Metals (small AIM natural resources).
Investment thesis (3 bullets)
- Genuine turnaround delivering measurable operating leverage. Cost base cut ~£1m annualised in H1 2025 (~20%), and combined with 15% revenue growth this flipped H1 EBITDA from -£0.1m to +£0.2m and generated £0.9m of operating cash 2026-09-21 interim results. Management explicitly flags "largely fixed cost base provides the potential for meaningful operational leverage as revenues expand."
- Strategic scarcity of the proprietary data asset, now externally validated. 40+ years of harmonised global gravity & magnetics data plus the Globe platform (15 years of build) — five of the six oil & gas supermajors are now Globe subscribers, and Xcalibur Multiphysics took a 25.5% shareholding in July 2026 2026-09-21 interim. Board explicitly states current price does not reflect data/IP value.
- Optionality on natural hydrogen at capital-light cost. European Commission natural hydrogen consortium contract worth €1m over FY26-FY27, HyMaroc JV with Sound Energy, and a growing pipeline — Getech is positioned as one of the few incumbents with the geophysical toolkit to locate this emerging resource 2026-09-21 interim; 2026-04-30 final results.
Key risks (3 bullets)
- Fragile balance sheet. Cash of just £0.6m at 30 June 2026, net current liabilities of £0.7m, historical going-concern emphasis of matter in the 2023 audit report 2024-06 final results. Any working-capital shock (delayed customer receipt, single contract slippage) could force dilution.
- Cyclical, concentrated end-market exposure. ~66% of FY2025 revenue from transitional petroleum; sales dropped 21% in 2023 on oil & gas capex retrenchment 2024-06 final results. Small customer base means single project slippage is material — H2 2023 profit warning was driven by exactly this.
- Xcalibur stake creates governance uncertainty. A 25.5% strategic holder acquired just weeks after the H1 result is either the first step toward an approach on the cheap or a strategic partnership that de-risks the business — the board describes "engaging constructively" 2026-09-21 interim. Minorities could be squeezed at a modest premium.
Operating leverage
Getech has a classic high-fixed-cost, capital-light software/data economics profile. Total cost base excluding exceptionals was £5.2m in FY2025 and roughly flat in H1 2026 at £2.4m — the marginal cost of an incremental Globe subscription or renewal is near zero. Gross margin (ex-amortisation) improved from 63% in H1 2025 to 65% in H1 2026 2026-09-21 interim. The March 2026 Asian NOC renewal at a 28% price uplift shows real pricing power on existing contracts. On a £5.5m revenue base, we estimate incremental contribution margin on new subscriptions is 70–80%: a hypothetical 15–20% revenue beat (~£0.8–1.1m of additional revenue) could add £0.6–0.9m of EBITDA — roughly 2–3x the FY25 EBITDA level. The clear observable inflection point is ARR breaching the £4.8m fixed cost base, at which the business becomes sustainably free-cash-flow generative. Management's key stated KPI is precisely this: "growing ARR ahead of cost base." However, absolute scale is tiny — even generous operating leverage on £5m revenue produces sub-£1m of profit, capping the leverage in absolute cash terms.
Value-trap signals
- Structural revenue stagnation: Revenue was £5.1m in 2021, £4.7m in 2024, £5.0m in 2025 — five years of flat-to-declining trajectory with one restructure in between. Growth is only just resuming.
- Sub-scale in a market with vastly larger competitors (TGS, Viridien) — the moat is real but the moat protects a small pond.
- Historical going-concern emphasis of matter in FY23 audit report.
- Repeated dilution — £1.7m placing at 2p in August 2024, prior fundraise of £6.25m in 2021, both dilutive to legacy holders.
Earnings vs. expectations
The pattern across five years is: frequent misses in 2022–2023 when strategy was overextended into H2 Green (green hydrogen developer), followed by consistent in-line-or-modest-beat delivery under the new CEO from Jan 2025 onward. The Dec 2023 trading update was a clear profit warning (annual revenue guided down to £4.0–4.4m vs. prior expectations, delays in customer projects). Subsequent updates (Jan 2026, July 2026) delivered in-line results consistent with prior guidance, with FY25 revenue landing at £5.0m matching Jan 2026 preliminary numbers, and H1 2026 revenue of £2.4m/EBITDA £0.2m confirmed exactly at trading update stage. The pattern is "cleaner under current management, but only four quarters of clean delivery" — not enough for high-conviction beat/miss scoring.
Conviction
Conviction: 2 (low)
Anchoring factors: (1) the disclosures are reasonably clean and the recent trading pattern is consistent; (2) multiple independent valuation approaches (ARR multiple, EV/EBITDA, revenue multiple) converge in a similar range. Limiting factors: (1) the absolute mcap is tiny, so the fair-value range is £5–8m — wide in relative terms and any single contract materially moves it; (2) the Xcalibur strategic stake creates unpredictable optionality that could cap or extend the upside; (3) the switch from "loss-making, going-concern warned" to "EBITDA-positive turnaround" is only 12–18 months old.
